premium hand finished engineered wood flooring uk

A timber floor should not feel like a standard product selected from a fixed colour chart.

At Geddes Hardwood, we source carefully specified unfinished engineered timber and complete the colour, texture and protective finishing in our Liverpool workshop.

This gives us greater control over the finished appearance and allows the floor to be developed around the architecture, materials and practical requirements of the project.

From quiet natural oak tones to deeper smoked colours, textured surfaces and tailored coating systems, our hand-finished wood flooring is supplied to private clients, interior designers, architects and developers throughout the UK.

Why Choose a Hand-Finished Floor?

Many prefinished floors are available only in fixed colours, grades and coating systems.

This can work well when the required appearance already exists within a standard collection. However, more considered interiors often require greater flexibility.

A hand-finished floor allows the specification to respond to:

  • Cabinetry and joinery
  • Stone and worktops
  • Paint colours
  • Fabrics and soft furnishings
  • Natural light levels
  • Architectural style
  • Expected wear and maintenance
  • The preferred level of warmth or contrast

Rather than selecting the nearest available colour, the floor can become part of the wider interior scheme.

why choose hand finished

Developed Around the Project

Every interior responds differently to timber.

A pale finish may appear cooler in a north-facing room and warmer alongside limestone or natural fabrics. Darker flooring can create depth and contrast but may need careful consideration in smaller or less naturally lit spaces.

We begin by understanding:

  • The type and style of property
  • The rooms in which the flooring will be used
  • The surrounding materials
  • The preferred colour direction
  • The level of natural timber variation desired
  • The expected use of the space
  • The preferred maintenance approach

From there, we can recommend suitable timber grades, textures, colours and protective systems before producing representative samples.

Specifying Wood Flooring

Bespoke Colour Development

The natural colour of oak is affected by its grain, density, grade and surface preparation.

For this reason, colour development is more involved than applying a stain to a neutral background. The timber itself forms part of the finished appearance.

We can develop finishes across a broad range of tones, including:

Pale and Raw-Oak Finishes

These finishes are designed to preserve the quiet, freshly sanded appearance of natural oak while still providing practical protection.

They work particularly well in contemporary interiors, coastal schemes and spaces built around limestone, plaster, pale cabinetry and natural fabrics.

Warm Natural Oak

Natural and honeyed finishes enhance the warmth and grain of the timber without making the floor appear overly yellow or orange.

These tones can work equally well in period properties and modern family homes.

Smoked and Aged Effects

Smoked, fumed and aged finishes create greater depth and variation within the oak.

The final appearance can range from softly weathered and muted to rich brown and dark chocolate tones.

Grey and Muted Finishes

Greyed and softened finishes can reduce the natural warmth of oak and create a quieter architectural appearance.

These colours need careful development, as excessive pigment can flatten the grain and make the timber appear artificial.

Dark and Expressive Colours

Deep brown, charcoal and near-black finishes create a strong contrast within an interior.

Surface texture and sheen level become particularly important with darker colours, as they influence how light moves across the floor.

Surface Texture and Character

Colour is only one part of the finished floor.

The way the timber is prepared can alter how the grain is seen and felt, how colour settles into the surface and how the floor responds to daily wear.

Available surface treatments may include:

Smooth Sanded Surfaces

A smooth surface creates a clean and refined appearance.

This can suit quieter grades, contemporary interiors and projects where a more consistent visual result is required.

Brushed Oak

Brushing removes some of the softer grain and leaves the denser structure slightly more pronounced.

This enhances the natural texture of the oak and can make everyday marks less visually prominent.

Planed and Textured Surfaces

More pronounced textures create movement across the surface and can give the floor a more tactile, handcrafted character.

These finishes are particularly effective when combined with natural oils and layered colour treatments.

Aged and Distressed Effects

Subtle ageing can soften the appearance of a newly produced floor and help it sit naturally within an older or more characterful property.

The degree of ageing should be carefully controlled so that the floor feels authentic rather than artificially distressed.

Textured Process

Natural Oil or Water-Based Varnish

The protective finish affects the appearance, texture, maintenance and future repairability of the floor.

Neither system is universally better. The appropriate choice depends on the room, expected use and preferred long-term maintenance.

Natural Oil Finishes

Natural oils penetrate into the surface of the timber rather than creating a heavy film above it.

This produces a tactile, low-sheen appearance that retains a close connection with the grain and texture of the oak.

Oiled floors can be nourished and maintained over time. Localised areas can also often be repaired without treating the entire room.

They are particularly suited to clients who value natural materials, subtle ageing and long-term repairability.

Durable Water-Based Varnishes

Water-based varnishes create a more enclosed protective layer over the timber.

They can provide strong resistance to everyday wear, moisture and staining while retaining a natural-looking, low-sheen appearance.

A varnished finish can be particularly practical in kitchens, busy family homes and commercial or development projects where straightforward routine maintenance is important.

We can explain the practical differences and recommend a system based on how the floor will be used.

More Than a Colour Sample

Small samples are useful for establishing an initial direction, but they cannot fully represent the variation found across a larger timber floor.

Once the preferred colour and finish have been identified, we can produce a larger-format sample board where appropriate.

This allows the client and project team to assess:

  • Natural colour variation
  • Grain movement
  • Knots and grade character
  • Surface texture
  • Sheen level
  • The relationship between adjacent boards
  • How the finish responds to the project lighting

For interior designers and architects, larger samples can also be presented alongside cabinetry, stone, fabrics and other materials during the specification process.

Hand-Finished Wide Plank, Herringbone and Chevron Flooring

Our hand-finishing service can be applied across a range of engineered oak formats.

Wide Plank Flooring

Wide and long boards provide a larger surface on which the natural grain, texture and colour variation of the oak can be appreciated.

Hand-finishing allows the floor to be tailored to the scale and atmosphere of the room.

Herringbone Flooring

Herringbone contains a greater number of individual blocks, making consistency and balanced colour variation especially important.

The block dimensions, grade and finish can be selected to suit both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Chevron Flooring

Chevron creates a strong directional pattern and clean architectural lines.

The colour and texture can be developed to complement the geometry without overwhelming the pattern.

Parquet and Versailles Panels

Bespoke panels and parquetry require careful finishing so that the pattern remains clear while the individual timber elements continue to feel connected.

We can coordinate the colour and coating system across panels, borders and adjoining plank flooring where several formats are used within the same property.

A Controlled Workshop Process

Finishing timber requires time, preparation and suitable curing conditions.

Our workshop process enables us to control each stage rather than relying on the limited options of an already finished board.

A typical project may involve:

  1. Confirming the timber specification
  2. Producing initial colour samples
  3. Reviewing and adjusting the finish
  4. Preparing a larger sample where required
  5. Approving the final specification
  6. Processing the flooring in batches
  7. Allowing the coating system to cure
  8. Inspecting and preparing the order for delivery

The exact process varies depending on the finish, quantity and project requirements.

Our aim is to achieve a consistent overall result without removing the natural variation that should be expected from real wood.

Premium Wood Flooring

Knowledge Developed Through Working With Timber Floors

Geddes Hardwood began with the installation, restoration and finishing of timber flooring.

This practical background has shaped the way we now produce our own flooring collection.

We have seen how poorly selected finishes can wear, how colour changes when coatings are applied, how different textures respond to use and how maintenance requirements affect the long-term experience of the floor.

That knowledge allows us to consider the complete life of the product—not simply how it looks when the first sample is produced.

Our hand-finished flooring is developed with attention to:

  • The natural characteristics of the timber
  • The surrounding interior materials
  • The intended use of the room
  • The required level of protection
  • Future cleaning and maintenance
  • Local repairability
  • Long-term refinishing potential

Frequently Asked Questions

We have had them all and are always happy to answer any technical questions surrounding all topics wood flooring to the best of our knowledge. Here’s a few that you may be wondering about:

What makes engineered oak flooring premium?

Premium engineered oak flooring should combine good-quality timber with reliable construction, accurate machining, an appropriate wear layer and a well-selected protective finish.

Board dimensions, grading consistency, adhesives, supporting layers and manufacturing tolerances all contribute to the quality of the finished floor.

The finish itself, and the expertise that goes into the surface preparation and application together with the above quality of construction together make for more premium engineered wood floors compared to your more mainstream, mass produced products.

Sampling Service

Can engineered Oak flooring be used with underfloor heating?

Many engineered Oak floors are suitable for use with underfloor heating, provided the board construction, dimensions, installation method and heating operation are appropriate. Although, not all engineered wood flooring is suitable for underfloor heating. We make sure all of our engineered selection is suitable for use with wet and electric underfloor heating systems.

Suitability should always be confirmed for the specific product rather than assumed across all engineered flooring.

Compatibility with UFH

Can engineered oak flooring be refinished?

This depends on the thickness of the oak wear layer, the condition of the floor and the sanding method used.

Floors with a substantial wear layer can generally be renovated when required, and more times than those will less. Watch out for engineered wood flooring with very thin wear layers / lamellas.

In many cases, local maintenance or a lighter surface treatment may be more appropriate than aggressive sanding.

Sanding & Refinishing

Which is better: oiled or varnished engineered oak?

Neither finish is universally better.

Natural oil provides a tactile surface that can be nourished and repaired over time. Water-based varnish offers a more enclosed protective layer and can provide straightforward routine maintenance.

The right choice depends on the appearance, room, expected use and preferred maintenance approach.
